I am a former journalist turned technical writer, but my real job is raising four kids with my wife and sometimes collaborator Angeline Hawkes.
I’m the author of numerous published short stories, horror novels, and novellas, including The Midnight Order from DarkFuse, and the latest Fulbright & Hawkes collaboration Night Wraith from SST Publications.
Once upon a time, I belonged to the Horror Writers Association. I organized and chaired the Dallas-Ft. Worth chapter of the HWA from 2003-2011. We hung together for a few years, had some good times, but ultimately disbanded. I received the Richard Laymon President’s Award from the HWA in 2008. My short stories have received honorable mentions in The Year’s Best Fantasy and Horror and Best Horror of the Year. I am now an active member of the International Thriller Writers organization.
A child of the 1970s and teenager of the 1980s, I am an avid reader, fan, and collector of all manner of horror starting with the most influential novels of the literary horror movement in the late 1960s, continuing on through the end of the horror boom in the mid-1990s. I personally feel that my paperback horror collection is an awesome site to behold; my paperback crime and mystery collection ain’t bad either.
My earliest memories of horror films include sitting in front of the TV with 3d glasses watching Creature from the Black Lagoon, and hiding at the end of the hallway, peering through the legs of the kitchen table after bedtime to watch the television premier of The Exorcist. I’ve never been as scared watching a movie as I was when, after all this sneaking around, my mother finally agreed to let me watch the ‘Salem’s Lot mini-series on TV in 1979 and I had nightmares for weeks. Years later, as a teenager, I spent a lot of time in video stores and dark rooms enjoying horror movies good, bad, and ugly. I share my love for these things and more on my blog from time to time, as well as a site I run called Realms of Night — I hope you’ll find something of interest.
